SME is a South African mechanical engineering company specialising in industrial and military HVAC (Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning) systems. The company was established in 1991.

Our main manufacturing, R&D facility and offices are based in Gauteng, South Africa. We also have a service branch in Richards Bay on the North- East coast of South Africa. A joint venture company was established in 2001 in the Middle East. This will enable SME to expand, market and support new products in the GCC countries.

All products are designed and manufactured inhouse. Turnkey solutions can also be provided to all our customers. State of the art computer analysis software and design tools are used by our expert design teams to ensure that SME stays market leaders and in step with current and future technology.

Consulting work in terms of thermal modelling and heat-load calculations as well as field tests and measurements for vehicles, cabins, containers cold rooms etc. is part of day-to-day operation. Designs and calculations to recommend solutions for the environments where air conditioning or cooling systems are needed can also be done.

Our well-equipped factory is able to provide in all the manufacturing needs and requirements to deliver customised solutions to all our customers. SME products are manufactured to the highest quality standards (Industry and Military).

Diesel and Electric Locomotive cabin air conditioning units with climatic control, fully automated irrespective of hot or cold climate conditions. All units are heavy duty, stainless steel, self-contained and modular to ensure high reliability and easy maintenance. These systems can be powered from inverter or AC electrical supply. Other speciality air-conditioning systems were also done, including coach systems

Design and development of air conditioning systems for aluminium smelter factories. These units also have stainless steel enclosures and operate in 55°C highly corrosive ambient conditions.

SME has a long history and wide experience of military systems. Products range from generating sets and ventilating systems to cooling systems (Vapour compression, Brayton air cycles and Stirling coolers). Our product application range from light armoured vehicles to heavy armoured vehicles to stationary or truck transported shelters. In addition to the above, air filtration systems for full NBC protection can also be provided (Mobile or stationary applications) as well as customised thermal insulation. SME provide solutions where other companies fail or lack design and technology know how. Our products also have a proven reliability record with military operation in the world's most harsh desert conditions over the last decade.
